S.B. de Alportel
International Tapas Restaurant and Bar Mesa do Chefe
To get here, just make for Moncarapacho and then follow the signs. When we arrived, we found a typical Algarvian eaterie – friendly and welcoming. We were received by John, the host and owner. Emphasis here is unusual: “tapas” of the world.
“Tapas” is a word invariably associated with Spanish cuisine but, as the menu explains, a “tapa” is a small portion of any kind of food “to taste”. The house motto here is “eat while you drink, and drink while you eat”! We decided to take the bull by the horns and take a trip round the world, sitting at a table. We ordered mushrooms in cream and garlic (€3.95) and wild potatoes (€3.25) Spanish-style, as well as a typically Dutch coleslaw, made of cabbage and carrots, seasoned with mayonnaise.
We decided to dip into China, too, with some Tempura prawns (€4.25). Our gastronomic whirl was surprising – all the dishes prepared with care; produce all noticeably fresh. John shared his gastronomic knowledge and was the perfect and friendly host. Although we had very little room left, we tried a dessert: strawberries with chocolate and cream… irresistible!
If you’re planning a dinner for a group, this place is perfect. Since opening, John and co-owner and chef Emma have been keen to make a difference and invite clients to new experiences – like their theme lunches, Chicken and Rib nights with 60s, 70s and 80s disco with of DJ Little John on Fridays, BBQ events and Shellfish Sundays.
They have lots of ideas and their restaurant has already been rated Nº 1 on Tripadvisor. Catch up with them on their facebook page, or via their website: www.mesadochefe.com
