Restaurante Japonęs & Sushi bar Kioto

Ah! Back again to the delights of raw fish and rice! Well, I am justifying the choice by the fact that this restaurant is very new. It opened only six weeks ago – and could have passed unnoticed (as it’s taken the place of another kind of oriental eaterie) except that it went in for a concentrated leafleting campaign.

It’s also interesting to see how this kind of restaurant has begun to catch on here. The Portuguese like sushi! Okay, first impressions were a little cold: the dining room was practically empty on a weekday lunchtime in central Faro. My host tried to explain in pigeon Portuguese that it’s as a result of the crisis.

The up-side, of course, is that the sushi chef was working solely for my benefit. I sat at a small table for two, where I could watch all the work going on in front of me. Everything’s made to order, with patience and precision here. The secret is that they offer a cheap alternative to regular sushi – with simplified “decoration” - but the quality is hardly different from other restaurants of this ilk in the market. At lunchtimes, they offer a kind of buffet ŕ la carte: with 78 choices to choose from.

The cost: €9.50 per person, with drinks and coffee extra. This truly spells serious competition for the competition as beyond the variety of sushi on offer, diners are allowed to repeat their order again and again – something that doesn’t happen elsewhere. This isn’t meant to be an invitation to gratuitous gluttony – just good news for those who love sushi!

A middleweight glutton did very well with the “sushi combination” (about 10 pieces), a mixed sashimi (strips of sea bass, tuna and salmon), two or three California rolls, four small crepes and some fried prawns! All washed down with a cup of Japanese green tea (which may not be to everybody’s taste). Another interesting feature: they sell take-away assortments here from €6.50 a box, with a minimum of 15 sushi delicacies…

Specialities: sushi; Hours: daily from midday to 3pm and from 7pm to 11pm; Bill: €11.40 for 1 at lunch time; NIF 501 500 839.
