Restaurante «O Franguinho»

Olhão has long been a golden corner when it comes to typical Algarvian cuisine. In this land of fishing folk it’s difficult to choose from all the possibilities on offer – but while all restaurants here offer fish and shellfish, «O Franginho» also caters for those who like grilled chicken and meat, and we have to say that their variety of chicken is every bit as good as what’s on offer in Guia!

First to arrive at the table was the couvert (olives and butter), with some delicious little fried cuttlefish that left us wishing for more. As you’d expect, this place has all the typical Algarve “classics”: from monkfish rice, to turbot with pasta, cuttlefish, cataplanas and much more. But if your tendency is towards meat, you’ll be hard-pressed to make a choice between kebabs, Brazilian “picanha” and various stews.

The best idea would be to try a bit of everything by going with a group of friends. Our suggestion: start the meal with some shellfish (the best on offer from Ria Formosa), usually clams, cockles, oysters, etc.

We sweetened the whole experience with a wonderfully generous serving of egg-white tart for dessert. This restaurant can take up to 500 people, so it’s ideal for weddings, baptisms, etc. It also has a private car park – which rapidly fills up at weekends. If you arrive on a Sunday, you’ll probably spot footballers from the Olhanense premier division team, as they use «O Franginho» as a favourite rendezvous. Well, we liked it too and would unreservedly recommend it!

Price for 2 people: €23; Management: José Pinto; Bank cards: credit; Multibanco; Parking available.
