Team Spirit!

We began in Olhão, then last week were in Faro. Always animated, noisy and bustling, we meet all kinds of people in these renovated traditional markets: locals, tourists, some smiling and friendly, others sullen and grumpy…
The idea is to publicise the newspaper and get ourselves “out there” because even though we’ve been in business for 15 years, there are still lots of people who haven’t heard of us. The tour is also about putting “a human face” on the newspaper – getting to meet people direct.
Perhaps you’ve never wondered what goes into the newspaper you pay €1.80 for every week?
Well, it involves a team of 12 – from receptionist to salespeople, including director, manager, journalists, designers and translators, along with another world of graphics, distributors, kiosks, etc. We’ve all worked for some years on the «Algarve 123» – believing in this unique product in the Algarve (and possibly the rest of the country: to be honest, we don’t know of any other national trilingual product).
Every week we try to present pertinent topics in our “Vivalgarve” cultural supplement. We introduce a local restaurant (which we’ve visited anonymously) and its specialities, we mention new business initiatives (on our back page), we present an up-to-date diary with all the events of the week, and we voice some of the day’s pressing social issues …
Commercial ads are created and designed by our production department, and each classified is received with care – either by phone, through the mail or post, or taken over the counter at our offices in Portimão – and then translated into three languages and proof-read so that every Thursday our new edition can appear out on sale.
All this requires time and human resources. That’s what goes into the €1.80 that you pay the news vendor. So, to all our readers who buy «Algarve 123» every week and enjoy its benefits to the extent that you stay with us, here’s a big “thank you”!
Next Friday we’ll be “on tour” in Loulé market. Hope to see you there!
