ADAPO

SOS animal, again!

In the past, we’ve repeatedly publicised the many problems of “more or less formal”, “more or less organised” groups and bodies that try to help animals. But in spite of all the appeals – and the goodwill of many unsung citizens who try and reduce all the suffering – the fact is that the problems always end up returning, and prompt us to ponder (without any moralising) what kind of society we are.

This time, we’ve received a communication from ADAPO (the association for the defence of animals and plants of Olhão), which has been struggling since the beginning of the year with a serious lack of funds with which to continue its work rescuing abandoned animals.

“The money we get from the local council, and contributions from members and benefactors haven’t covered the debts we ran up last year with local vets. The result is that ADAPO cannot help all the (many) abandoned street animals, often found in deplorable conditions, needing food and medical care”, the association tells us.

Since it was set up in May 2004, ADAPO has concentrated on animal protection – namely of cats and dogs – which has involved veterinary care, food, temporary shelter and finding responsible “adoptive” owners. A sterilization campaign to cut down on “uncontrolled” reproduction has been one of the association’s top priorities.

Hoping to “improve the (group’s) economic situation”, and continue its work, ADAPO is organising a fund-raising dinner, to take place on 28th May at 8pm at the Restaurante Ria Formosa, in Olhão’s Avenida 5 de Outubro.

Everyone is welcome and bookings will remain open until 16th May. The cost per person is just €13 (€6 for children), and there will be the added attraction of fado singer Luís Manhita. For more information, call 911 915 27/ 967 620974. ADAPO also promotes educational/ awareness initiatives, designed to highlight the care and respect that all animals deserve. New members and volunteers are always welcome.
