Joyce Craveiro, owner of sex shop «Love me More»

Sex, Spice, and DVDs

When the bottom fell out of the property development market, gamine interior designer Joyce Craveiro, 37, asked herself “what next? What interests me?” The answer was “erotica” – nothing sleazy, more the high-class end of the sex toys market. And so «Love Me More» was born – not a sex shop, she’ll tell you, but “an erotic boutique”. A “hidden jewel” in the centre of a commercially-depleted Lagos offering “something very different”. For someone who thought “male self-management” was a man who knew what was in the fridge and how to handle the dishwasher (it’s actually what looks like a small thermos and has an artificial vagina inside it) this was going to be an experience…

Tell us some more about your products?

Well, this one here for example is one the ladies really like. It’s called “Dragon Creme” and it’s based on a Japanese legend about times when women were left alone for long periods of time when their men were away fighting. When the men came back, the women prepared a creme that basically turned their man’s penis into a dragon. The men would be able to possess their women all night…Ladies buy this, and come back for more.

But it’s not cheap, at €32.80 a tub...

I don’t really carry cheap items – particularly when it comes to toys for penetration for women. There is a lot of cheaper stuff available on the market, but the materials used are toxic for us, and can cause all sorts of health problems. The law doesn’t protect women in this respect, so it is up to me to aim high.

You have an impressive selection of vibrators!

All made with medical-grade silicone so that they’re perfectly safe. The most expensive, with rechargeable batteries, works out at €145. If you have a man with one of these in his hand, you can feel penetration with oral sex – which you can’t normally do unless you get a guy that is incredibly flexible.

How flexible?

He’d have to be a yoga master. The average guy couldn’t do it.

Do you think the people of the western Algarve are ready for this?

This shop isn’t for everybody. But good sex keeps people together. You can use sex for a lot of things, and everything else can work round it.

That’s one of the reasons why I went into this business. It’s a way of helping people invest in their relationships. As they go through the crisis, it offers people a way to safeguarding relationships. Think about it, we know that 50% of marriages end up in divorce, but what’s the percentage of people who stay together, but wish they weren’t? If we knew that then we’d be talking big numbers.

So you don’t believe in everlasting love?

Some people might, but it hasn’t happened to me.

Do you believe in love without sex?

I believe in sex without love, but no, not love without sex. If you don’t have sex and you don’t have money, would people still stay together? I don’t know…

But this place offers more than sex toys, edible lubricants and lingerie?

A lot more. I have some great books, herbal stimulants, and I hold what we call “tuppersex meetings” on the patio here – very informal.

They don’t last long. People pay €5 to €8 to come and have a drink and meet other singles. It’s kind of a springboard for other things. And I take part in events like the ladies night that was held at West’s Restaurant in the Marina last weekend – where three or four businesses catering for women promote their products. I have also started selling porn. Very classy, feminist porn. Quite tasteful, like everything else in the shop…
