RIAS needs help
Algarve birdlife in peril

On the date that we went to press no less than 137 birds had been admitted to RIAS base in Olhão - the majority ducks of various species (Anas platyrhynchos, Anas strepera, Anas crecca) and coots (Fulica atra).
Although not yet confirmed by the laboratory, the reason behind the deaths and sickness is suspected to be botulism. It’s a disease of bacterial origin, which develops in stagnant waters and in high temperatures – and could well be associated with a problem at the sewage treatment plant at Salgados, Faro. Back in July of 2008 the plant caused similar problems.
This year’s crop of sick birds were handed in by workers at Ria Formosa’s natural park (recently elected one of the «7 Natural Marvels of Portugal») and staff from «Águas do Algarve», the firm that runs the sewage treatment plant.
Right now, RIAS is caring for 70 extremely sick birds. Their “treatment is slow” and “they need to be fed twice a day”. Thus, RIAS is appealing for the help of volunteers, as well as financial help with their costs. Anyone interested should contact the centre on 927 659 313.
