Algarvian swimmer crosses Straits of Gib

Algarvian Paulo Sousa swam the Straits of Gibraltar last Friday 28th August, becoming the oldest Portuguese swimmer to do so, and one of only eight countrymen to boast this achievement (only four had managed the feat before Paulo’s attempt with three others).

The distance from Tarifa and the Moroccan coast was covered in 4 hours 25 minutes – a time that the Algarvian swimmer had already estimated.

The idea for the swim came when Alexandre Pereira, 34 and Manuel Silva, 33 – both open-sea swimmers from Belenenses – placed it on a website.

Paulo Sousa, 38 – also an open-sea swimmer – accepted the challenge, along with 19-year-old Francisco Freitas.

The total journey, in a straight line, measured around 15 kilometres – but due to currents, the swimmers ended up swimming between 17 and 20.

Previously, the straits had been crossed by only four swimmers: Joaquim Batista Pereira in 1953 (who went on to repeat the crossing in 1956), José Freitas in 1962, and Nuno Vicente and Miguel Arrobas, who both swam the distance last year.
