Portugal’s average old age pension is just 397 euros

The news comes via official data, published by the daily newspaper «Correio da Manhã» - and stands close to the subsistence poverty line (fixed back in 2008 at 354 euros per month).
In regional terms, pensions in Bragança are the lowest: 293.60 euros.
Lisbon registers figures at the other end of the scale, with an average payout of 716.94 per month. Another marked contrast is the discrepancy between male and female pensions.
Men, on average, receive 506.81 euros per month, while women are awarded a monthly average of only 300.45.
In the first quarter of the year, a total of 18.000 Portuguese workers took retirement – most of them due to lack of available work.
In all, there are 1.8 million people receiving retirement benefit, of which 53 per cent are women.
Meantime, the “Caixa Geral de Aposentações” pays out 72 pensions with a value of over 5.030.64 euros per month – the highest of which goes to former minister for internal administration of Santana Lopes Daniel Sanches who’ll receive every month from September onwards, a pay-out of 7.316.45 euros.
The list of people receiving retirement benefit of over 5.000 euros per month is overseen by judges and magistrates.
