Teenager sets out to solo navigate the world

Laura Dekker, the teenager attempting a solo round-the-world trip, has set out from Portimão.

The Dutch 14-year-old is attempting to become the youngest sailor of all time to circumnavigate the world on her own – hoping to finish the challenge before she’s 17.

Dekker, who was born on a yacht off the New Zealand coast during a seven-year journey that her parents made round the world, will make her first stop in Madeira or the Canary Islands, depending on the weather.

Her challenge has already created huge controversy – with Dutch education professionals trying to step in and prevent her from going.

But the final decision was up to a court in Middelburg, which ended up giving their blessing to the voyage, and leaving full responsibility with the teenager’s parents.

Her sailing boat “Guppy” was anchored in Portimão Marina in a discreet corner, away from curious eyes.

Laura Dekker should complete her marathon just before her 17th birthday on 20th September 2012 - and this way she’ll become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the world solo.
