Paulo Borges of PPA agreed that this was “a wonderful moment of fresh air for the anti-bullfight movement throughout the world, and we’re simply taking advantage of the opportunity”.

Less than a month ago, the Parliament of Catalonia outlawed bullfighting in their northeastern region of Spain, with effect from 1st January 2012. With 65 votes in favour and 55 against (with nine abstentions), Catalonia’s Parliament approved new legislation proposed by 180.000 citizens who have appealed for an end to bullfighting – considered one of the cultural highlights of Spain.

Catalonia is the second Spanish region to outlaw bullfighting. In 1991, bull running was prohibited in the Canary Islands – also as a result of a regional animal protection ruling.
