Passos Coelho challenges Government to “govern”

After the last Social Democrat (PSD) leader, Manuela Ferreira Leite, failed to attend the previous two editions of «Festa do Pontal», the new leader, Pedro Passos Coelho, changed all that last Saturday by gathering 400 militants in Quarteira and giving a rousing speech – full of very pointed messages to the Socialist (PS) Government.

Passos Coelho wants José Socrates to resign on 9th September – the last possible day for the President of the Republic to dissolve Parliament and call for early elections.

The Social Democrat leader challenged the Government to “give way to another party” if it is to continue its “non-governing” of the country. If the current Government doesn’t feel up to “responding to the challenges” it should “create conditions whereby, on 9th September, it returns the power to the Portuguese people to decide on their own future”.

Passos Coelho revealed that his party would only approve the state budget for 2011 if the Government agrees to reduce expenditure and not fall back on increasing taxes (again!).

The PSD want Socrates “to have the courage to make changes that are important, with social economy and the justice system in the front line” “constructing a social state that is more fair and modern, with policies directed at those that most need them”.
