UK votes Algarve as “cheapest” holiday destination

Every year the Post Office, the financial arm of UK’s Royal Mail does a round-up of 10 beach holiday destinations in Europe, to show which one offers the best deal for British families.

This year, the Algarve took “first place” – and the reason for the winning ranking is our restaurants.

Checking the prices of 12 items and 12 holiday destinations with similar infrastructures and conditions for families with children, the Algarve (more exactly, Albufeira) emerged as the winner against destinations like Spain’s Costa del Sol, France’s Brittany, Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast, the Greek island of Corfu, the Neapolitan region of Sorrento and Turkey’s Olu Deniz.

“The Algarve is this year’s cheapest destination, less than half the price of the highest-priced, Sorrento in Italy”, says the Post Office report. “Family meals have been slashed in Portugal, but have risen steeply in Turkey and France, and cost three times as much in Italy”, concludes the study, which ranks Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach and Spain’s Costa del Sol in second and third places respectively as the cheapest holiday destinations.
