Portugal - “job insecurity” nation

Portugal is the third country in the EU, after Poland (26.5 per cent) and Spain (25.4 per cent), registering the highest number of worker’s on fixed-term contracts, according to the latest data from Eurostat.

The European statistics agency shows that 22 per cent of the working population in Portugal endures “job insecurity”. It has been like this for the last six years – and the trend is set to continue, even though figures have dropped since 2009. These are the people who, in the event of lay-offs, will be the first to go.

Meantime, Portugal was the European country where the minimum wage increased the most this year. But efforts by businesses and the state to increase the minimum wage to 475 euros were not enough to change things when compared to other countries. Portugal is still second from bottom among the 11 Euro member states that have set a minimum wage limit.
