More young suicides

Educational factors are blamed for this, along with the lack of social support services, as well as lack of discipline and/ or alterations within family dynamics.

According to the centre for suicide studies (“Núcleo de Estudos do Suicídio”) at the psychiatric unit of Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital, girls are more prone to suicidal tendencies.

The centre reveals that 40 adolescents committed suicide in 2001, 60 in 2002, 50 in 2003, 45 in 2004 and 24 in 2005.

Bullying (either physical or psychological/ verbal) and relationship upsets among boyfriends/ girlfriends, friends or parents are the habitual trigger factors in young suicides – although the centre estimates that 90 per cent of suicides are related to psychiatric problems and long-term depressions.
