In a press release, AHETA (the association of hoteliers and tourist developments) indicated that the biggest falls came in the areas of Albufeira (less 16.6 per cent), Tavira (less 8.9 per cent) and Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António (less 6.5 per cent).

The only increase came in Loulé – a borough where hotel occupancy rose by 18.9 per cent compared to 2009.

The German market was the one that registered the greatest slump, bringing 28.8 per cent less business than in February 2009 – followed by the British market, which suffered a similar fall of 24.8 per cent.

Only the Dutch market showed any increase: 4.8 per cent.
