Kidneys, mind and teeth torment Portuguese

These numbers are only topped by Japan and the United States, say the Portuguese Society of Nephrology (SPN). They gave these findings at the «Encontro Renal» event that went ahead last weekend at Vilamoura’s “Centro dos Congressos”.
Elsewhere, more than a million Portuguese – a figure that represents 11.5 per cent of the population – suffer every year from some form of mental disorder that reflects on the family, work situation and society in general.
On 23rd March, the national mental health commission will be reporting results of the first study into the national prevalence for mental disorders.
Meantime, the latest data on the health and oral hygiene of Europeans paints a less than smiling picture of the Portuguese mouth.
On average – according to results of an inquiry published by the most recent “Eurobarometer special” - 57 per cent of Europeans visit a dentist every year, but in Portugal, the percentage drops markedly to 46 per cent, and 11 per cent of those involved in the study admitted to being “embarrassed” to go to the dentist, because of the state of their teeth…
