Left-wing digs-up landfill dirt

Contamination of local waters and soil in winter - and a noxious stink through the summer – around the Eastern Algarve landfill site, in the borough of Loulé, are issues that the left-wing “Bloco de Esquerda” is keen to clear-up.

Deputies Rita Calvário and Cecília Honório recently presented the Government with a request for information on the site - run by the waste treatment company «Algar».

The party wants to know if the Ministry of the Environment and Territorial Planning is aware of the “incorrect treatment of waste products and waste water” and whether they have information on how many government checks have been effected on site over last few years.

The left-wingers claim the landfill “has functioned for many years with serious discrepancies” leading to “very negative consequences for the environment, public health and quality of life for the communities in the surrounding area”, in the heart of the Serra do Caldeirão.

Also at issue is the fact that promises made to compensate local communities – namely, Cortelha, Vale Maria Dias, Barranco do Velho and Ameixial – with mains drainage and basic sanitation improvements, have still to be honoured.
