Money-spinning subscriber TV

The proof of this is in the number of subscribers to paid-TV networks - which grew by 10.6 per cent in the 4th quarter of 2009, compared to the same period in 2008.
The numbers come from Anacom (the national communications authority), which shows that the total number of subscribers to paid-TV is now more than 2.5 million.
Put another way, on average there are 45 subscribers to every 100 Portuguese homes.
At the end of 2009, cable TV represented 57 per cent of the total number of subscribers, while the popularity of “other technologies” available on the national market increased by 1.3 percentage points – representing around 16 per cent in total.
The “Grupo Zon” still leads the market (64.4 per cent), with PT as the second major paid-TV operator, with a quota of 23 per cent of the nation’s subscribers.
The third operator in the big league continues to be Cabovisão, with a quota of 10.2 per cent.
