Creche crisis Algarve

It’s not news to any Algarvian parent, but a recent study published in the «Proteste» magazine, put out by the Association for Consumer Rights (DECO), confirms a desperate state of affairs: the Algarve has the highest percentage of parents dissatisfied with the precarious network of crèches and kindergartens serving the region’s babies and children.

The lack of places in crèches is one of the principal problems for parents.

Thirty-nine per cent of those questioned in the study could not get their children into a crèche, and 14 per cent were finding the same problem with nursery schools.

Another issue referred to by the families that took part in the inquiry is the cost of sending children to crèches in general – often exorbitant in comparison with monthly pay packets.

DECO’s study also called attention to the fact that children who spend nine-hours a day in crèches (32 per cent), spend most of the time “watching television”.

Replica studies carried out in Belgium, Italy and Spain show that Portugal is the country where children pass the largest amount of time plonked in front of the telly.
