This represents an increase of 128.5 per cent relative to 2008.

The victims in the main are women – a total of 6.539, which translates into 127 per month, an average of 18 per day.

They tend to be between the ages of 35 and 45 - the same age as their aggressors, who are men, generally their partners.

There are also a large percentage of cases involving the 25 to 35 year age group. In most cases, the victim is married, Portuguese and with children.

And in one in three cases, she has been suffering abuse for more than two years.

In 2009, APAV opened 10.132 cases that denounced 17.628 crimes – 15.904 of which corresponded to crimes of domestic violence.

Abuse was at the top of the list of complaints (psychological – 31 per cent, physical – 26.4 per cent), followed by threats/ coercion (18.3 per cent) and defamation/ insults (10.1 per cent).
