So says the Association of Arrhythmology - and as a result of various international studies, and analysis of known data on the Portuguese population, it concludes that sudden cardiac death kills 10.000 nationals annually.
The same data shows that 260.000 Portuguese are hospitalised every year due to heart failure – which breaks down to an average of 712 hospital admissions per day!
The definition of sudden cardiac death is one that occurs rapidly after the onset of initial symptoms – which could be chest pains, rapid pulse or the sudden loss of consciousness.
Those at risk are, on average, people over the age of 40, under a lot of professional stress who don’t exercise/ practice any kind of regular sport.
