Sexist Portuguese labour market

The majority of complaints had to do with employers penalising workers over maternity leave, or the period allowed for breast-feeding.

Complaints also covered the difference in salaries paid to men and women – when both were at the same professional level.

In all, in 2009, a total of 4.859 inspections for alleged/ suspected discrimination were carried out in various institutions and businesses (as opposed to 4804 in 2008).

The swoops generally resulted from tip-offs from unions and CITE (the Commission for Equality at Work) – a body created in 1979 to promote equality between men and women at work.

In 2009, ACT fined firms, where proof of work discrimination was established, amounts varying between 213.882 and 613.445 euros.
