Algarve in worst situation since 1975

Added to this is the marked, brutal disappearance of state investment in the region and the lack of a regional short-term emergency plan – or indeed a new medium- or long-term development strategy to encourage diversity and stimulate the ailing sectors”.

In a press release, Mendes Bota – PSD (social democrat party) deputy for the Algarve – shines the spotlight on the “serious economic situation in the region” which translates “into around 30.000 people unemployed – according to latest figures revealed at the Algarve’s trade unionists’ meeting”.

Bota also attacks the Caixa Geral de Depósitos bank for its failure to help “Alicoop – one of the largest retail businesses in the Algarve”, the closure of which “will bring with it the bankruptcy of dozens of suppliers and local producers, causing a chain-reaction to the whole business fabric of the Algarve”.
