Alcoutim opts for hunting
More than 80 per cent of the borough of Alcoutim is made up of “hunting areas” – and the local municipality is now planning to use this activity as a way of promoting local economic development.

For the time being, there are a number of projects for the development of hotels/ restaurants linked to hunting.
There are a total of 43 hunting areas existent in Alcoutim right now – 14 of which are touristic.
If in the past, a lot of Portuguese travelled to Spain to hunt, the situation has been reversed now – with many Spanish hunters coming to Alcoutim.
The red-legged partridge is one of the most coveted regional species.
Local mayor Francisco Amaral adds that hunters have more money to spend than golfers. “A hunter can spend as much as 500 euros in a weekend”, he tells.
Costs of travelling, food and board, are added to the 17 euros that hunters pay, for example, for every rabbit they shoot…
