Socialist Government ignores Algarve?

In declarations to journalists on 27th January, Macário referred to money destined to the Algarve via PIDDAC – the Programme for Investment and Development Expenses in Central Administration.
Re-elected recently as president of AMAL – the inter-municipal community of the Algarve – Correia explained that he was worried that direct investment in the Algarve has suffered a “considerable fall”.
PIDDAC envisages a total budget of 52.9 million euros for the Algarve in 2010 – involving 3.5 million euros for Lagos, 3 million for Portimão and 2.5 million for Albufeira. These are the boroughs receiving the largest slice of funding.
Faro is expected to receive 1.4 million euros – most of which will go towards the construction of a building for the University of the Algarve’s new course in Medicine (700 million euros).
The city’s «Cidade Judiciária» project – a plan which the municipality has been pushing for for several years – will once again go on the back-burner, as there is no PIDDAC funding in the pipeline for it for 2010.
