Algarve farmers “days are numbered”

If in a not-so-distant past, the Algarve supplied the rest of the country with citrus fruit, today the reality is bankruptcy – an exodus from the fields and greenhouses.

Algarvian farmers are claiming that the region’s fruit and veg production is “disappearing” – and as a result, they’ve sent a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture.

In it, they’ve explained that of the 1200 hectares of greenhouses that the region possessed 18 years ago, only 200 remain.

The Association of Farmers from the borough of Faro and adjoining areas say the situation results from “innumerable” damages caused over the last two decades by storms and lack of sufficient insurance.

“Reduced” state support, the proliferation of commercial shopping centres and the decreasing capacity of growers to organise themselves on a commercial level, are other factors that point to the current state of collapse in Algarve agriculture.
