Algarve develops storm warning system

It may not save the day – but it will help prevent large-scale damage. To avoid “tragedies”, the University of the Algarve (UAlg) is developing – in tandem with 16 partners from nine European countries - a coastal risks alert system.

The objective is to give authorities, and people in general, time to react against major storms.

It’s a computerised programme that analyses maritime “agitation”, as well as meteorological data, in consideration with the morphology of the coast – giving a forecast of what could happen two or three days ahead.

Entitled «Micore», the programme is being tested in beaches in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, England, Poland, Bulgaria and Holland.

Here, the area chosen for case study is the Ancão peninsula, Ria Formosa.

The programme is expected to be fully-functional within a year.
