Almost 64 per cent of Portuguese can’t afford holidays

According to a report by Eurostat – the EU’s offical data agency – on risks of poverty and consequent material privation of populations of the 27 member states in 2008, almost 64 per cent of Portuguese don’t have enough money to pay for an annual “one week holiday” away from home.

Other countries with high percentages are Romania (76 per cent) and Lithuania (60 per cent).

According to the same source, Portugal is also the country in the EU where the highest number of people (35 per cent) cannot afford adequate heating in their homes. Our country was followed by Bulgaria (34 per cent) and Romania (25 per cent).

Other statistics reveal that 4 per cent of Portuguese can’t afford a meal with fish, meat or the equivalent in vegetables every other day.

The European average rounded out at 9 per cent.
