Operation Safe Summer 2009

Authorities up security for the summer

Until 15th September, almost 50 thousand police and law-enforcement agents will be patrolling the main coastal areas and keeping an eye on houses that are empty for the holidays. This is a promise given by the Direcção Nacional da Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) and the Comando-Geral da Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR).

Indeed, police reinforcement will be visible along the beaches and their immediate surroundings, at road junctions and in tourist, commercial and residential areas. Last year, the PSP police registered a 17.6 per cent increase in crimes committed during the months of July, August and September.

This translates as an increase of more than 8.000 incidents. In tandem with «Operação Verão Seguro 2009» (Operation Safe Summer), the PSP will be issuing a brochure aimed at tourists to Portugal, giving the most important contact numbers they should have when visiting the country.

Policing of beaches will be shared with the GNR (responsible for the control of riverside beaches and the Alentejan and Algarve coasts) in an operation that will involve every available operative.
