Portuguese universities charge millionaire fees

Portugal’s public universities will be charging the highest fees for the next scholastic year: €1037.20 euros. In simple terms, in a country where the minimum wage after tax is barely above €400 and there are one million people out of work, each university degree will cost €34.49 more than last year (when fees stood at €999.71).

Of the 15 public universities, only those in the Azores, Algarve, Oporto and Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro will not be charging the limit defined by the DGES (state higher education board). The DGES sets a minimum charge for fees of €630.50 - but no university will be applying this price.

Masters degrees vary according to courses, oscillating from between €965 to €3.950. Meantime, the University of the Algarve is the university with the greatest drop in the number of courses available (due to lack of intake). The 1852 places offered last year have now dropped to 1653 this year.
