Algarve mayors support disgraced Aljezur councillors
Presidents of all the Algarve’s borough councils have declared their solidarity for colleagues from Aljezur - José Amarelinho and Manuel Marreiros - both handed suspended jail terms and stripped of their mandates last Friday by the Judicial Tribunal of Lagos.

The case against the president of the municipal assembly and the borough mayor involved the issuing of licences at the beleaguered Vale da Telha urbanisation. In a press release, Macário Correia, president of AMAL - the intermunicipal community of the Algarve - and himself stripped of his own mandate for serious planning violations a few days later, said the two politicians “deserve our greatest respect and consideration”, despite the fact that they had been found guilty of prevarication.
In a statement of their own, Amarelinho and Marreiros said they would be appealing against the convictions. “We are profusely convinced that we have done nothing that should be penally censured in that urban area”, they said, stressing that they did not understand “the fact, or facts, that led to such a severe and unjustified condemnation”.
