Algarve has (private) cardiac unit

The south of Portugal’s first cardio unit opened this week at Faro’s HPA private hospital – and straight away, three heart surgeries were performed.

With an investment of 35 million euros, the unit presents an alternative to heart patients who otherwise have to travel up to Lisbon for planned surgeries.

It is backed by agreements with all major health insurance companies – both Portuguese and International – and has 90 beds, a round-the-clock emergency unit, a child heart unit and three operating theatres. The hospital involves 144 doctors in 44 different specialities – but, as yet, there is no provision for national health patients to receive heart treatment at the new unit.
