493 more Algarvian families with Church charity support in 2011
Cáritas, the Church charity, supported 493 more Portuguese families in the Algarve last year than it did in 2010, taking the number of families helped from 932 to 1.425. Thus, the number of people under the Cáritas umbrella in the Algarve came to 4.042 in 2011 - that’s 1.288 more than in 2010.

In Faro, the social welfare canteen “served 2.570 meals and distributed and collected 6.334 items of clothing and the equivalent of 12.860 euros in food vouchers”, said a release from the organisation. In 2011, the “Fundo Social Solidário” collected a total of around €59.000 in donations, of which €55.000 has already been distributed amongst the most needy.
