Investigations into origins of Ria Formosa
Investigators from CIMA (the marine and environmental centre) at the University of the Algarve have begun a series of depth soundings along Ria Formosa – the most important lake system in the country - to take detailed readings of the structure of its layers of sediment.

The study will establish a chronological sequence for the various processes that led to the Ria’s formation and will also compile a history of the antropic involvement – the exploitation of natural resources by Mankind – that has accompanied its formation.
The project is being funded by the national foundation for science and technology, and will run until 2014. Intriguingly, Portugal’s largest lake system is little known by scientists.
