Mário Soares suggests “peaceful revolution” against austerity
In an interview given in one of the latest editions of the Spanish newspaper «El Pais», legendary Portuguese Socialist and former president of the Republic Mário Soares has said that the current generation of politicians is basically ineffectual.

“They don’t have the courage to make the necessary decisions”, he said, explaining that the today’s politicians “don’t know how to say “no!”. “Most of them are connected to larger interests”, he lamented.
“Since the Treaty of Rome 50 years ago, we’ve never had such an ineffectual generation of politicians”, he added. As well as criticising Angela Merkel in no uncertain terms, he had a message for prime minister Pedro Passos Coelho – whose policies he called “pure neo-liberalism” and “a complete joke”.
Soares predicts demonstrations against the government’s austerity measures, and was quoted as saying that the solution for Portugal may lie in a “peaceful” revolution…
