Golf faces “massive problem” over IVA hike

The Algarve faces “a very serious problem” now that IVA has been increased from six to 23 per cent. The declaration comes from Alexandra Solleiro, executive president of the Tivoli Hotels and Resorts.

“At first, golf courses will accommodate the increase, but it will not be possible to maintain business as before – and that will take the Algarve to a very serious problem”, he said recently in Lisbon. Solleiro confirmed that IVA was increased because golf “is a sport of the rich”.

However, he added, the government may have forgotten that “80 per cent of business comes from abroad, from the middle-classes of Europe (who are not rich)”. Solleiro also told journalists that he hopes the government will make toll payments simpler for the Spanish.

At the moment, payment methods are “not adequate”. He concluded: “I am against tax abuse that compromises the economic growth of the country”.
