Hoteliers want to axe “Turismo do Algarve”
Elidérico Viegas, president of the hoteliers’ association AHETA, has confirmed that entities like “Turismo do Algarve” and its regional branches “should be scrapped” and substituted by new organisations.

Backing the recent declaration by parliamentary minister Miguel Relvas that “businessmen in the sector” should be the ones to run tourism, Viegas is all for the government starting to take a “back seat” role.
“We should bring an end to one body promoting the region internally (“Turismo do Algarve”), and another promoting it abroad (“Associação de Turismo do Algarve”)!” Said Viegas.
Instead, there should be a “flexible public entity, run in cooperation with the private sector, apolitical, and which doesn’t involve as many people as the current organisations involve” he added.
