False number-plate watch!
A ruse to falsify number plates - in order to avoid paying motorway tolls on the A22 - is being closely monitored by GNR police, as well as the firm “Estradas de Portugal”.

The move was prompted after a driver was found at the weekend with his number plates altered with black duct tape. Loulé’s investigative nucleus of the GNR arrested the driver – an employee at a car sales stand in Tavira – and he was taken to court, along with his boss – who admitted being the mastermind behind the scheme.
The car in question was also impounded. Since then the GNR has been watching out for vehicles with blacked out number plates, plates folded in on themselves or any other ruse to avoid toll payments – and the authorities warn that anyone who doesn’t pay their way on the highway will lose their vehicle.
By Monday this week 20.000 fines for non-payment of tolls had already been issued – just four days after the system had been introduced!
