Portuguese fear “medical errors”

A study undertaken by DECO – the consumer watchdog – between January and April this year over the “perception of errors and medical negligence” shows that one fifth of Portuguese people have been victims of medical errors, and among these 58% have gone to court with their grievances.

Meantime, more than half that number fear the problem – and when it comes to public hospitals, fears increase: 35% of those questioned thought these places were more susceptible to error and negligence.

Public hospitals are followed by old people’s homes (20%), and 19% of people fear problems also in private hospitals.

The study was effected with DECO’s counterparts in Belgium, Spain and Italy, and involved more than 4600 people (of which 1575 were Portuguese).
